Septic System Power: Managing Your System During Outages

Practice Water Conservation

In the event of a power outage, it is important to adopt smart water management habits. While the shower, sinks, and toilets still work, flushing excessive amounts of water down your drains is not advised. Because this wastewater cannot be pumped during a power outage, heavy water usage can cause waste to leech into your septic drain field.

To avoid overwhelming your septic system, we suggest that you turn off the breaker for your septic pump. You should also minimize flushing toilets, take short showers, and shut off the water when brushing your teeth or washing the dishes.

"Dose" Your Septic System

The process for acclimating a septic system after a power outage depends on the type of septic pump system installed outside of your home.

In the case of on-demand systems, we recommend turning the pump on for about two minutes before turning it off. Continue this practice for around 4‐6 hours.

Referred to as "dosing," this technique will slowly introduce effluent to your drain field in slow amounts at a time. When conducted properly, dosing can prevent system overload and leakage.

However, as previously mentioned, this acclimation process depends on the particular system. Our septic tank plumbers can ensure that you are conducting the process safely. Contact us today to schedule septic system maintenance!
